Sunday 26th January marked the date that East Grinstead Women retained their national indoor title and by doing so, create history by retaining a national title for the first time in the women's club section.
EG qualified for the finals in 1st place, winning 7 out of 8 fixtures and scoring 49 goals along the way (the highest EG Women have ever scored in an 8-game qualifying campaign), with notable goal contributions from Biba Milla (17), Chloe Brown (8) and Ellie Rayer (6).
From the squad of 14 players, no fewer than five U18 players all contributed to the team's successes throughout the competition, further demonstrating the exciting future prospects we have as an indoor squad.
The semi-final was against Sutton Coldfield, an experienced, organised side that attempted to negate EG's attacking play with a deep defensive style. Goals from Biba Milla (3) and one each for Lily Walker, Summer Knight-Thompson, Chloe Brown, Rosie Hope and Mollie Mason secured a comfortable 8-1 victory and through to the final.
Facing Surbiton in the final, a familiar opponent, the team knew we had to play to our own style, being an attacking, creative team and ultimately looking to out-score our opposition. After racing into an early lead, the score was level at 2-2 after the first quarter. Two goals in one minute in Q2 stretched EG's lead to 4-2 at half time, which ultimately tilted the momentum heavily in EG's favour. Two further goals in the second half meant that EG emerged victorious, 6-3 score line, champions once more. Goals scored by Chloe Brown, who won the player of the match award (3) and one each for Biba Milla, Summer Knight-Thompson and Carlota Gomez, who won the goal of the final award.
Given the club's rich indoor history, it was fantastic to see both our men's and women's sides together at the finals day, along with in excess of 120+ supporters in the EG section of the stand. Huge thanks must also extend to the EG Faithful, who brought the positive, supportive energy throughout the entire day.
Next up, the Women's team travel to Porto 13-16 February to play in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy.
