Today Ireland Women secured the EuroHockey Club Championships II title in Galway in what can only be described as an epic encounter...
Today in Galway, Ireland Women, featuring East Grinstead's Womens Super 6s Captain, Chloe Brown, secured promotion from the EuroHockey Indoor Club Championships II by winning on home ground.
Completing Friday and Saturday's matches, Ireland went into the final day having dropped two points in the late 5:5 draw with Slovakia on Saturday night. This placed the team second, behind Lithuania with one match to play... against Lithuania who were undefeated.
The game took place today at 11:30am and started off very cagey as expected. The first quarter ended with the scores at 0:0. The second quarter was marked with a green card against Lithuania in the 13th minute, but Ireland could not capitalise. In the event, Lithuania broke the deadline in the last minute of the half to go 1:0 ahead with an open play goal.
The thid quarter saw Ireland receive a green card and Lithuania receive a yellow card. but no score. Ireland therefore had everything to do in the final quarter, beginning one goal down.
And what a quarter it was, with Ireland scoring FIVE times in the ten minute period including two penalty corner goals from Chloe Brown.
Ireland finished top scorers in the competition, secured the title and promotion to the top tier of European competition next year, and Chloe Brown was Ireland's top scorer with 6 goals.
In fact, Chloe was also voted PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT.
Congratulations Ireland Indoor and congratulations Chloe Brown !
