Women triumph in "perfect Porto weekend"!
East Grinstead Women crowned champions at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy!
The Women's Indoor Team travelled to Porto Feb 14-16 to represent England in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy, qualifying as the English club representative thanks to winning the Super 6s domestic title in January 2024. The competition is formed of 8 teams, each being national champions of their respective nations.
First up in the Pool phase, EG played vs Mladost (Croatia). Racing into an early lead, EG never looked back, winning the match 8-2 (Biba Mills scoring an impressive 7 goals). That evening the team played vs Watsonians (Scotland), knowing that victory would secure their place in the promotion pool. A 6-1 victory (with a hattrick from Chloe Brown) continued the momentum and put EG in pole position in the group.
Saturday morning vs Milano (Italy) was a much tighter affair, always tough to play the 9am fixture. Some resolute defending and dominant possession phases gave us a 2-0 victory, concluding the pool phase in 1st place.
Into the promotion pool, playing on Saturday evening at 8pm vs Brzeziny (Poland), who boasted 4 of the Poland national team's World Cup winning squad earlier this month. Brzeziny also topped their pool, winning all of three of their group games. The match was hotly contested, EG going behind on two occasions and finishing the 1st quarter 2-1 down, despite having the better chances in the early exchanges. That pressure eventually prevailed with EG scoring a further 3 goals to win the match 4-2.
Sunday lunchtime, EG vs Rot-Weiss Wettingen (Switzerland), final game of the competition and the championship on the line. EG went ahead early on, before being pegged back by the Swiss outfit. A second quarter littered with cards (5 in total) saw EG down to only three outfield players at one stage of the game, descending the game into chaos. Half time, 3-1 up, the game was in the balance. Late in the game, EG converted two more chances to win the game 5-1 (Biba Mills scoring a hattrick again).
This is the second time that the team has won the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy (previously in 2023) and the first time that we have won both the domestic and European titles in the same season. This means that the team will now compete in the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup in February 2026.
Special shout out & congratulations to 16 year old Biba Mills, who has had an unbelievable Indoor Campaign, winning top goal scorer of the tournament this weekend. Scoring a huge 34 goals across Indoor Qualifiers, Super6s & then the Euro's!!
An important thanks must go to our incredible supporters who travelled to Porto, especially for bringing the noise and motivation in the Saturday night fixture (after a long afternoon quality-testing Porto's local delicacies…..).
We are very fortunate to have a loyal fanbase who support us through thick and thin, home & away, for which we are extremely grateful.
