EG Ladies last played competitive hockey in Milan in the Eurohockey Club Trophy. That was the second of two European trips last season and provided the squad with a taste of outdoor European hockey. Saturday marked the team's return to competitive action following a summer of international activity and a drive to get back into Europe !
However, EG did not start as planned, going a goal down to Birmingham during the first quarter. EG gradually worked their way back into the game with an equaliser from Courtney Hansford in the second quarter.
Quarter three was quite an end to end affair with 'keeper Myers called into action on several occasions. EG managed to produce a number of rapid attacks throughout the second half but it wasn't until the final moments that the decisive moments arrived. With the clock frozen and apparently only seconds remaining, EG were awarder a corner which was rewarded. A sharp injection from Chloe Brown with a deflected pass returning the ball to her at the left of the goal provided the opportunity. Captured perfectly by Eva Gilbert's fine photography, Brown was able to lift the ball past a diving Birmingham 'keeper and into the net.
The timing was so tight that there was no time for the restart and EG captured the spoils.
It was a fabulous afternoon of hockey with debuts for Liv Breed, Kayla Reed, Sally Sime, Mollie Mason and Carlota Gomez. Returning to EG colours having graduated from Birmingham and Nottingham respectively were Pippa Lock and Amy Thompson.
