EGHC's Men's 1st Team played their first home match of the season on Sunday October 8th, hosting a Holcombe side that was coming straight off the back of a win against new Premier League side Sevenoaks. Read on for details...
This match had been scheduled for Saturday September 23rd but unfortunately maintenance on the EG floodlights had caused an intermittent electrical fault on our water canons. Although our Ladies were able to play their game that day at Tonbridge, the mens sides agreed to postpone to a future date.
Coming into this first home game of the season, Holcombe had suffered an away defeat to Bestow but the evening before registered their first win of the season at home to Sevenoaks. With EG coming into the game off the back of an away defeat to Brooklands both sides were keen to build momentum.
EG started the game at high intensity resulting in an early goal from England and Great Britain International, David Condon from open play. Not do be outdone, fellow England & GB International Chris Griffiths opened his season's account with a short corner strike much to the delight of the home crowd. Not long afterwards, Wesley Jackson scored a stunning reverse stick open play goal past England and Great Britain Captain George Pinner.
The second half began with an intense period of pressure from Holcombe who were rewarded with a goal within minutes of the restart. With the score at 3:1, Paddy Smith in goal was called into action pulling off a string of fine saves to stabilise the group and weather the Holcombe storm. As the game opened out both sides shared territory and position; Ali Clift was able to make a number of overlapping runs, Ross Stott broke up a number of Holcombe attacks and Richard Hildreth showed his versatility with periods in midfield and defence. Daniel Faulkner and Luke Tyne strengthened their defensive partnerships, both bringing the ball out of defence with confidence and Tijn van Groesen & Liam Ansell partnered with Andy Piper pressurising the Holcombe defence.
Dominic Bowden and Kieran Mulholland both put in excellent performances in midfield both defensively and linking play together. As the game headed towards full time, Tony Wilson was able to get on the score sheet with a well worked corner goal, and Simon Faulkner completed the scoring with a Captain's corner.
