Maxifuel Super Sixes Champions 2012

East Grinstead have retained their National Indoor Championship title for the fourth successive year with an emphatic 8-5 victory in the final against Beeston on Sunday.  It took a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final against Reading for Grinstead to reach the final for the eighth year in a row.

Over 100 Grinner supporters made the trip to Wembley and were rewarded with two tremendous performances which had them on the edge of their seats one minute, then gasping in awe at some sublime hockey the next. Reading were always going to present the major challenge of the day and took EG to the wire with a 5-5 draw in normal time before finally being thwarted by Richard Potton who saved a vital penalty stroke in the sudden death barrage.

Beeston took an early lead in the final, but five minutes later Grinstead blitzed them with four goals in four minutes and had effectively put the match out of their reach by half time, playing some absolutely stunning hockey to make the scoreline 6-3.  EG continued their dominance in the second half and scored twice more to put the result beyond doubt before Beeston scored two quick goals in the last minute.

Congratulations to everyone both on and off the pitch who has contributed to this outstanding achievement and good luck to the squad who travel to Hamburg in two week's time to represent England in the EuroHockey Indoor Champions Cup.

BOOK YOUR INDOOR FINALS TICKETS NOW!!

East Grinstead have qualified for the Super Sixes Indoor Championships by retaining the National Indoor League title for the sixth successive year, winning all four of their matches this weekend at Loughborough. They will play fourth place Reading in the first semi-final of the Maxifuel Super Sixes Championships at Wembley on Sunday 29th January.

The Club have made a group booking for Finals Tickets and you can order yours NOW by emailing Owen Hill here.  Tickets this year are being sold at two different prices by England Hockey, depending on the location around the pitch. We have been very fortunate to obtain seats in block N which is where we have been in previous years and is level with the centre line. These are ideally located for viewing the games and available at £20.00 for adults and £6 for U18s.  These prices replace those previously advertised and we apologise for any inconvenience which the earlier notice may have caused.

We are planning to run a coach to Wembley so if you would like to book seats for this at £15 each please let Owen know in your email. Payment can be made by cheque or online.

Indoor squad on target

East Grinstead began the defence of their National Indoor League title last weekend with three wins and a draw.

Going into the first of two league weekends with several new players, Grinstead drew their first match against Surbiton as the team quickly started to work together. The afternoon match was another close encounter with Grinstead coming out 4-3 winners against Bowdon.

An early start on Sunday against newly promoted Harleston Magpies provided an opportunity for the team to develop further, with Captain and joint coach Scott Ashdown leading the team to a 6-3 win.

In their final match against Beeston, confidence was high as the team were gelling well and finding their groove. Eager to go into the second weekend as the only unbeaten team, Grinstead played at an unrelenting pace and were in control throughout the match, running out 6-3 winners.

Goalscorers:

Dave de Prez       7

Scott Ashdown    4

Ross Stott          3

Mike Holland        2

Andy Piper          2

Daniel Koschyk    1

Darren Cheesman 1

The players and management now enjoy a short break for the festive season before returning to training in the New Year.

A hat-trick for Rick Gay gives Grinstead three points

Grinstead knew that solid teamwork and determination would be required on Sunday if they were to claim any points from their last league game before the winter break against a resurgent Loughborough Students side.  The Students scored after 16 minutes and held onto the lead despite continued pressure from the home team. Five minutes into the second half Danny Hall's speed and experience forced the opposition to concede a penalty corner which Rick Gay blasted past the keeper.  Loughborough regained the lead within minutes, but conceded a second penalty corner when Andy Piper's run into the D lead to another mistake. Rick Gay stepped up once again to make it 2-2.  Both sides were pushing for the winner in the last ten minutes and Grinstead finally found an opening when a shot from Darren Cheesman hit a defender's foot in the D, giving Gay his third penalty corner opportunity which he seized without hesitation.

The men's 1s go into the winter break four points clear at the top of the Premier League; while the Ladies 1s lead South Division 2 by one point.

Season reaches halfway stage

East Grinstead increased their lead at the top of the EHL Premier Division to four points on Saturday as we reached the midpoint of the season. Second bottom side University of Exeter failed to present a significant challenge for the leaders for whom Welsh international Rick Gay scored twice. Gay opened the scoring in the twelfth minute before rounding off the 2-0 victory in the closing minutes.  See full EHL newsletter here
